How to design, plan and build a home that will save 50% or more of your fossil fuel costs, be a sustainable structure for generations, a delight to all who see it, and fun to live in. This workshop will study the basic principles of direct gain passive solar design and construction for our New England climate. Material will be geared to both professional and owner builders. In depth discussions will include site evaluation, how to orient a building, rules for solar planning, heat transfer and air movement, building materials, structural systems, how to think sustainably, architectural quality, and a sense of humor. Two classroom sessions will be followed by a field trip, by arrangement, to several passive solar homes.
Instructor Michael Greene, brings 40 years of experience designing, building, writing, and teaching about passive solar architecture to this workshop. Discussion and flow of ideas promises to be lively.
