This is a course for the new user who wants to learn the essentials, and gain hands-on experience with a personal computer.  Course topics will include an overview of the computer, hardware, software, purchasing considerations, the mouse, printers, computer terminology, and operating systems. You will also learn to search on the Internet, and an overview of software applications such as MS Word and MS PowerPoint will be presented.In addition, the course will train you to use Windows; including understanding the difference in operating systems and applications, the desktop, the explore function, control panel settings, tips on disk maintenance, and copying and working with folders and files.

In this workshop, both new users and users with some experience will learn how to manipulate the elements of the screen, how to create and edit documents, use the Auto Correct, Spelling, and Thesaurus features as well as handling files, saving, cutting and pasting, and printing. It provides skills required to perform basic word processing tasks in an efficient manner.

Keeping Your Computer Virus Free

Learn how to keep your PC running at top speed by deleting temporary files and cookies, introducing links to free tools that can detect spyware and Trojans, as well as how to get a free virus scan program, and provide information about the best virus scan programs available. Also, learn how to setup automatic Windows Updates, stressing the importance of letting these updates install and review some of the most common spyware programs; learning how to remove them from the add/remove programs, then how to run anti-spyware programs, and delete hidden temporary files in c:\temp, c:\windows\temp and c:\documents and settings\local settings\temp where a lot of spyware files hide.

CYBERLAW

A series of seminars that introduces students, educators and business professionals to the complex issues arising out of the new technologies of the information age economy. These workshops provide a foundation for understanding the concepts of law, and how those concepts are struggling with the challenges of the information age. Topics covered include: identity theft online (privacy, controlling personal information), copyright, (why is it illegal to download music?) and cyber stalking, (the Amy Boyer case and others).

Identity Theft:

The number of identity theft victims in New Hampshire has jumped from 349 in 2002 to 543 just two years later in 2004, an increase of more than 50 percent, according the Federal Trade Commission. Senior Assistant Attorney General Connie Stratton said those figures didn't surprise her."It's a huge problem that people are just learning about now and learning what kinds of things to do to protect their identities. It's a fairly new criminal statute in New Hampshire,” she said.

Cyberstalking and Online Harassment:

Cyber stalking is a specific kind of harassment. The Department of Justice 1999 study on the subject defines it as "the use of the Internet, e-mail, or other electronic communications devices to stalk another person. Stalking generally involves harassing or threatening behavior that an individual engages in repeatedly, such as following a person, appearing at a person's home or place of business, making harassing phone calls, leaving written messages or objects, or vandalizing a person's property." Cyber stalkers frequently follow their targets around the net, frequenting in chat rooms, message boards, newsgroups or mailing lists in which the target participates. At times they will also attempt to form relationships with those who are friendly with the target in order to get more information about the target.
